About James H. Bushart, Missouri Public Adjuster

Licensed Missouri Public Adjuster · SCLA · Serving policyholders statewide
I have spent fifteen years representing Missouri policyholders — and only policyholders — in property insurance claims. I do not work for insurance companies. When a homeowner or business owner has been denied or underpaid, my job is to investigate the loss, document it thoroughly, and hold the settlement to what the policy actually owes.
- Fifteen years representing Missouri policyholders in property claims.
- Licensed Missouri Public Adjuster (License #8207067) — verifiable through the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance.
- Senior Claim Law Associate (SCLA) — a designation earned through a multi-year program in insurance law, property claims, fraud, and liability, and held by relatively few public adjusters.
- Member, National Association of Public Insurance Adjusters (NAPIA).
- Missouri-based and Missouri-only — I am not a national firm that travels in after a storm and leaves.
- Licensed, bonded, and insured.
What I handle
I am selective by design. I focus on claims where the policyholder has already been wronged by the carrier — claims that were denied outright or grossly underpaid. That includes commercial property losses of any size and larger residential losses: hail, wind, and tornado damage, fire and smoke, water damage, and business interruption. This is not high-volume, sign-everyone work. It is detailed claim investigation and negotiation on losses that deserve it.
Why Missouri-based matters
When a major storm hits, out-of-state adjusting firms travel in, sign up as many files as they can, and move on to the next catastrophe. I am licensed here, I work here, and I am accountable here. I know the carriers that write Missouri policies, the storm patterns behind the losses, and the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance claims process. You deal with me directly — not a rotating file in a national queue.
Documented results
The examples below are a small sample of my work, not a complete record. They were selected at random from sourced claim files — not hand-picked to show only the largest recoveries — and over the years I have handled many more claims than the fourteen shown here. Each figure is taken directly from a document in the claim file: the carrier’s own estimate, settlement letter, payment draft, executed release, or appraisal award. Nothing is estimated or projected. Policy deductibles and any recoverable depreciation still held back pending completed repairs are excluded, because they are not money the policyholder actually received.
Across these fourteen documented claims, the carriers’ opening positions totaled $314,255.51. After the losses were fully documented and presented, those same carriers paid $1,997,519.33 — an increase of $1,683,263.82.
Representative examples:
| Property and loss | Insurer’s opening position | Total paid after presentation |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial / institutional building — windstorm Carrier had paid, then advised in writing that no additional damage was found; that position was withdrawn. |
$110,821.58 | $598,719.68 |
| Commercial religious property — tornado (wind, hail, water) Nothing had been paid when this office was retained. |
$43,235.83 | $354,562.77 |
| Residential — hail (asbestos-bearing tile roof) Resolved by appraisal award. |
$5,627.85 | $230,999.69 |
| Residential — wind and hail (cosmetic-damage exclusion) Carrier had applied a cosmetic-damage exclusion; resolved by appraisal. |
$61,224.00 | $165,020.48 |
| Residential — interior plumbing water Carrier’s own settlement letter recorded $0.00 paid when this office was engaged. |
$0.00 | $18,624.15 |
| Totals — the fourteen claims shown above | $314,255.51 | $1,997,519.33 |
These are selected representative results — a small sample of the claims this office has handled, not a complete record and not a portfolio average. Not every claim produces an additional recovery — some losses fall below the policy deductible, and some carrier positions are ultimately supported by the evidence. Where a claim does not warrant engaging a public adjuster, this office says so. Every claim turns on its own policy language, facts, and evidence; results vary. These figures are not a promise, guarantee, or prediction of any result on any other claim. Insureds and insurers are intentionally not identified, and supporting documentation for each figure is retained in this office’s claim files.
How I work
The initial claim review is free. I work on a contingency basis — my fee is a percentage of what is recovered, and if nothing additional is recovered, there is no fee. Every claim is evaluated on its own facts before any engagement, and I take on the claims I believe I can genuinely help. No outcome is ever guaranteed.
“Don’t get angry. Get paid!”
Serving all of Missouri, and only Missouri — including Columbia, Springfield, St. Louis, St. Charles, Rolla, Moberly, Wildwood, Union, Washington, Lebanon, Hazelwood, Florissant, and communities statewide.

Hey James, I enjoyed reading your blog and would like to talk about a guest post. If you could please email me at marvin@asbestos.com
Thank you for the great article on “Home Owners and Asbestos Exposure”, Marvin. This is something that every home owner and dweller should know.
I invite anyone with information that can benefit home owners to share it through this blog, as Marvin did.
Thanks for following my blog!
Thank you for your visit.
Jim Bushart is the best public adjuster around! He can handle it all, and is the epitome of professionalism, knowledge and courtesy. This is the man you want in your corner! I would be hard pressed to find an insurance company nightmare similar to what I’ve suffered, but I can bet, and win, that with Jim Bushart behind the consumer, the settlement you would not have been able to achieve on your was noterely vindication, but gratifying as well! I would not have had my insurer even pay a visit to my home without Jim Bushart.
Thanks, Kellye.
